TASK: How is written and visual language used to attempt to persuade readers to share the point of view of the writer of Meanwhile, Back in the Real World ? Meanwhile, Back in the Real World Dump your iPods, get off the net, throw your mobiles away, and start living in the real world, kids. So say the doomsayers, and, of course, pollsters like TruBlu. The fact is this technology is the real world now for many of today's youth. Most people over 50 are startled by kids talking on mobiles, kids with ears connected to MP3s, kids texting every few minutes and tapping away on tablets. But to say that this technology causes isolation from the real world and lack of general knowledge is ridiculous. Technology such as the Internet deepens and broadens the minds of all those who use it. The TruBlu poll surveyed 220 people in the suburbs of Melbourne. Which suburbs? This would have made a difference to results. And why just Melbourne? It’s impossible to generalise about teenagers from such a small sample. Of course, teenagers are more interested in listening to music or talking to friends on their mobiles than reading newspapers or watching TV current affairs. This is a clear example of their sociability, not an indication that they prefer dumb isolation. Are many TV current affairs shows really about current affairs or serious issues? Aren't they just a form of infotainment? Avoiding them might just as likely be a sign of taste and intelligence? Because a teenager has not been following political debates does not mean that he or she is out of touch with reality. Isn't it obvious that the survey was just another attempt to put young people down? The poll was designed to generate a bad picture of teenagers, i.e., show their ignorance. It’s easy to create polls like this. Lazy even. Which is ironic, as that is what most parents accuse teenagers of being. So, parents, answer me this. Can you bear now to leave your mobile at home when you go out? It is a boon for all sorts of reasons - ordering the takeaway; telling family you're held up on the train or in traffic; calling for Dad or Mum or brother to pick you up. Is this social isolation? Is this lack of awareness? Hardly. Mobile phones have brought a sense of personal and social connectedness that makes the world a safer, as well as a more interesting, place for everybody, especially young people. A comprehensive report of the uses of technology in schools, conducted by the Sydney Morning Herald, found that: 'Today's school students are downloading homework on iTunes, listening to lessons via podcasts, communicating with other students all over the world through social networking sites, and even video conferencing with leaders of business and industry.' ('Technology in the Classroom', Kelli Cambourne, Sydney Morning Herald, 19 January 2010) This is hardly creating social isolation. An impressive educational development in the last few years is the way in which technology has been integrated into Australian classrooms. Through technology and a wide range of teaching methods, the learning programs of students have been greatly enhanced. A view of typical classrooms (pictured) shows a learning situation that is using technology within a collaborative classroom discussion, a social situation for meaningful learning, both social and academic, in which students are enthusiastic and active participants. If you want to ban technology in the classroom, you are not living in the 21st century. Many human beings have an innate fear of change, especially the advent of new technology. In the past, we have feared the printing press, newspapers, credit cards, novels, movies, computers and even television as potential destroyers of our culture, our way of life, our kids' futures. The ancient philosopher Socrates warned against writing because it would 'create forgetfulness in the learners' souls, because they will not use their memories.' In the early 20th century, radio arrived and was accused of destroying reading among children and distracting them from their homework. With television, more recently, the fears went much further, accusing TV of damaging radio, reading, conversation, family life and national culture. There is no objective, medical evidence to support any of these fears. Plenty of anecdotes, but no hard evidence. So, the next time you want to attack teenagers for using technology, try clicking refresh instead and realise they are actually the ones thoughtfully and socially taking us into the future.

Explanation:

How to write a story if you are given a sentence "we live in deeds not in years "

Answers

Well it means the actions and good deeds that people do give meaning to life and help the person and their name live on. I’d go into a story with the thought that the main character lives a long life because of the good deeds (could think of outstanding and kind actions) he or she did and not just because they live to 70 years.

Answer:   All of us, at least once in our lives, have experienced our parents hollering at us for sitting idle. When they see us roaming around unnecessarily or sitting without any work, they seemingly ask don't we have better things to do? We always take it as unneeded screaming and fail to realize the deeper meaning it holds. Life spent doing constructive work, is life well spent. The great dramatist Shakespeare rightly observed that life should be measured by deeds, not years. Age is no criterion for the meaning of life. It is the actions, good deeds which give meaning to life and make man immortal. Long life is desired by all, but if one does not do any noble deeds, then such a life has no worth. Great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Abraham Lincoln, Swami Vivekananda, Mother Teresa and many others are remembered even after so many years after their passing. People still take inspiration from their lifestyles and preachings. It is only the great deeds of these leaders that have inspired many generations. A lily flower lives just for a day, but it is remembered for its fragrance and sweetness. Respect is earned by actions and not acquired by years. Existence becomes exciting when it is lived for others or when it does something beneficial to mankind. We generally work for the whole day, earn money and spend it on our needs. These are some common things that all do, but we should all do some noble deeds as well. We should share our smile, advice, cheer, and help with our fellow beings. These things may give them happiness and they may remember us when we are not around. Hence the saying, "We live in deeds, not in years," proves to be true.

How does a combination of character, plot, and setting in this excerpt from
Beowulf help you understand the Anglo-Saxon worldview and culture? Use
your understanding of story elements to analyze the passage and describe what
"the literary elements suggest about the underlying beliefs, values, and concerns

Answers

Although you have not put the excerpt to which the question refers, I can help you by showing you how Beowulf presents an overview of the Anglo-Saxon worldview and culture.

In the epic poem Beowul we can perceive a worldview in contrast to the one we have now. While we see nature as a place of peace and tranquility, the Anglo-Saxons had nature as a dark and dangerous place. For them, it was in nature that they found very powerful and cruel monsters, like Grendel. These monsters were always willing to attack deconcentrated humans who entered their territory, for this reason, they had a strong concern with entering into nature, fearing being attacked by monsters.

In contrast, the Anglo-Saxons saw domestic environments as safe. This can be seen from the representation of the mead hall in Beowul. The hall show characteristics that Anglo-Saxons saw as favorable and safe, such as wealth, security, good food, good games, community, protection and hospitality. For Anglo-Saxons these factors were not found in nature, because they were not part of a hostile and dangerous environment.

Answer:

(A) Now Owen understood exactly what it was like to be in George’s shoes.

Explanation:

This statement distorts what the life of George is like; making it appear to be great all the time. The distortion does not take into account the pressure of the high expectations and disappointment George would feel when he does not win the game. Owen thinks and feels that he knows exactly how it is to be in George's shoes--from just this one event. This is the distortion.

THE MATCH

There never was a time when the world was without fire, but there was a time when men did not know how to kindle fire; and after they learned how to kindle one, it was a long, long time before they learned how to kindle one easily. In these days we can kindle a fire without any trouble because we can easily get a match; but we must remember that the match is one of the most wonderful things in the world, and that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make one. Let us learn the history of this familiar little object, the match.

Fire was first given to man by nature itself. When a forest is set on fire by cinders from a neighboring volcano, or when a tree is set ablaze by a thunderbolt, we may say that nature strikes a match. In the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark. The first method, then, of getting fire for use was to light sticks of wood at a flame kindled by nature—by a volcano, perhaps, or by a stroke of lightning. These firebrands were carried to the home and used in kindling the fires there. The fire secured in this way was carefully guarded and was kept burning as long as possible. But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished. A sudden gust of wind or a sudden shower would put it out. Then a new firebrand would have to be secured, and this often meant a long journey and a deal of trouble.

In 1827, John Walker, a druggist in a small English town, tipped a splint with sulphur, chlorate of potash, and sulphid of antimony, and rubbed it on sandpaper, and it burst into flame. The druggist had discovered the first friction-chemical match, the kind we use to-day. It is called friction-chemical because it is made by mixing certain chemicals together and rubbing them. Although Walker's match did not require the bottle of acid, nevertheless it was not a good one. It could be lighted only by hard rubbing, and it sputtered and threw fire in all directions. In a few years, however, phosphorus was substituted on the tip for antimony, and the change worked wonders. The match could now be lighted with very little rubbing, and it was no longer necessary to have sandpaper upon which to rub it. It would ignite when rubbed on any dry surface, and there was no longer any sputtering. This was the phosphorus match, the match with which we are so familiar.

How does the author convince readers that the match was "the most wonderful thing in the world"? Please respond in three to five complete sentences, using evidence from the text to support your answer.

Explanation:

We note the author's intriguing statement at the outset when he said "that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make" a match.

Also, he further highlighted how problematic it was to depend on nature when he said "in the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark".

To express the problems further, the author also says that they would have to guard the fire but the fire would still go out sometimes and then they would have to go on long and difficult journeys.

Answer:

The author is trying to develop that relying on nature was problematic by stating that fire was first given to man by nature when mother nature made a forest light on fire. After that, humans would try to recreate that and that was very dangerous. They would try and to put a piece of wood in a flame kindled by nature.
