Explanation:

How is the motif of “nature” developed throughout the short story “The Interlopers?”

Answers

Answer:

Nature is presented as superior to humans in all inevitability in the text.

Explanation:

When the text beings, the two brothers treat nature as something they can easily control as they wish to but as it progresses, the strife between the brothers begins to culminate. It represents the infighting between humans.

Von Gradwitz and Znaeym eventually lose to the nature, not to each other as they fought for a narrow strip of forest for so long.

They remain the true interlopers of the story and the nature triumphs as something that cannot be overcome by any man.

The part of a word that modifies a word's meaning that consists of a letter, a syllable, or several
syllables and is attached to a word's beginning is a(n)

Answers

Answer:

Prefix

Explanation:

A Prefix is defined as a morpheme or the part of the word that is added to the beginning of a root word to modify its meaning. This element of the word usually consists of 'a letter, a syllable, or several syllables' which primarily functions to either modify or revise the meaning of the base word. For example, if we place the prefix 'un-' before the base word 'happy', it becomes the antonym of the word and means 'not happy' while the prefix 'semi-' alters the meaning of the word by making it half like if 'semi-' is placed before circle, it means 'half circle.'

Question: After reading the story the lady or the tiger by Frank R. Stockton what expectations did the princess have for her significant other regarding their relationship? How do these expectations influence her decision regarding his life?

Answers

Answer and Explanation:

In the short story "The Lady or the Tiger", the princess is in love with a man of inferior birth. Her father, a semi-barbaric king, is furious about their relationship. He decides the man should be judged by randomly choosing one of two doors. He can either choose the one where there is a tiger, and be killed instantly, or he can choose the one behind which a damsel awaits to marry him. This is the king's idea of a fair trial.

As the trial gets closer and closer, the narrator tells us of the agony the princess is facing. She loves the man, so she does not want him to die. However, she fears he will be too happy if he opens the door to the damsel. It's as if she does not expect him to be faithful in his love for her, as if the happiness of not being killed by a tiger will automatically transform into love for the pretty girl behind the door. Anyway, the princess has no expectations of continuing her relationship with him. He will either die or marry someone.

That realization is bound to influence her decision. However, the author does not make it clear what that decision is. He leaves it for the readers to wonder what she has chosen to do. She knows which door leads to which fate. Will she guide the man to the tiger out of jealousy? Or will she point him to the damsel to save his life? We cannot know for sure. But I dare say she, as a semi-barbaric princess (according to the narrator himself) would end up pointing him the door with the tiger. If she will lose him anyway, at least she will not lose him to another woman. We must remember this princess is quite selfish and spoiled.

Jonas Salk (1914-1995). For the first half of the 20th century, poliomyelitis, also known as infantile paralysis, was one of the most dreaded diseases to attack young people. By 1955 American physician and researcher Jonas Salk had developed a vaccine that almost eradicated the disease in the United States and other developed countries.
Jonas Edward Salk was born in New York City on October 28, 1914. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1934 and earned his doctorate in medicine from New York University's College of Medicine in 1939. While in medical school he had worked with Thomas Francis Jr. on killed-virus immunology studies. In 1942 he joined a group at the University of Michigan working on a vaccine against influenza. The vaccine was perfected in 1953.

In 1947 Salk became associate professor of bacteriology and head of the Virus Research Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. There he began working on the polio vaccine. Three viruses caused polio, and a vaccine had to be effective against all of them. By 1952 Salk had developed such a vaccine and conducted field tests on children. His findings were published in 1953, and a mass field test was done the next year.

On April 12, 1955, the vaccine was released for use in the United States. In 1957 Salk was named professor of experimental medicine at Pittsburgh, and in 1963 he went to San Diego as head of the Institute (later named the Salk Institute) for Biological Studies. In 1977 Salk was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He died on June 23, 1995, in La Jolla, California.

Answer the following question based on the Compton’s Encyclopedia Reading:

A. Dr. Salk did not have enough money to pay for his research and supplies

B. Dr. Salk has to create one vaccine that was effective against three different viruses

C. Dr. Salk had to convince government officials to allow him to test the vaccine

D. Dr. Salk’s idea for a vaccine was not supported by other scientist and physicians
