Read the passage from Sugar Changed the World. Sugar is a taste we all want, a taste we all crave. People throughout the planet everywhere have been willing to do anything, anything at all, to get that touch of sweetness. We even know exactly how thrilling it was to taste sugar for the first time. When the Lewis and Clark Expedition met up with the Shoshone, who had little previous contact with Old World products, Sacagawea gave a tiny piece of sugar to a chief. He loved it, saying it was "the best thing he had ever tasted." Sugar created a hunger, a need, which swept from one corner of the world to another, bringing the most terrible misery and destruction, but then, too, the most inspiring ideas of liberty. Sugar changed the world. We begin that story with a man who could never know enough.

Story ending with I have never been so embarrassed

Answers

Answer:

Story-writing.

Explanation:

During my college days, I went on a trip with my friends. It was an unofficial trip. This was for the first time that I was going on a trip with my friends. All of us had a camera with us to capture the natural beauty and some of our funny moments. We already had decided to share all the photos and videos after returning back home. I found this very excited that we will not talk about any photograph or video during our trip and discuss it after our return. So we all explored and enjoyed our trip. As soon as we returned back we organize a small gathering for photosharing.  Therefore, I was the first to share all my memories through photos and videos. Everyone appreciated my photos which made me happy. But by the time others began sharing their photos I felt so embarrassed because there were some very embarrassing pictures of mine. I tried to dance for the first time on this trip and my friends clicked my photo in a snake pose with a goggle and they called me a modern snake. My other friend captured a moment when I fell from the stairs like a ball. I left the gathering by making an excuse. I have never been so embarrassed before.

Answers

Although you have not put the excerpt to which the question refers, I can help you by showing you how Beowulf presents an overview of the Anglo-Saxon worldview and culture.

In the epic poem Beowul we can perceive a worldview in contrast to the one we have now. While we see nature as a place of peace and tranquility, the Anglo-Saxons had nature as a dark and dangerous place. For them, it was in nature that they found very powerful and cruel monsters, like Grendel. These monsters were always willing to attack deconcentrated humans who entered their territory, for this reason, they had a strong concern with entering into nature, fearing being attacked by monsters.

In contrast, the Anglo-Saxons saw domestic environments as safe. This can be seen from the representation of the mead hall in Beowul. The hall show characteristics that Anglo-Saxons saw as favorable and safe, such as wealth, security, good food, good games, community, protection and hospitality. For Anglo-Saxons these factors were not found in nature, because they were not part of a hostile and dangerous environment.

(P. 45) How did Beowulf introduce himself as a warrior soldiers? Use at least 3 describing words and support with a quotation.(50-60 words) (Beowulf)

Answers

Answer:

Beowulf presents himself as a loyal, strong and honorable warrior who submitted himself to the service of the Da*ish people in the name of peace and prosperity. He also says that he was chosen by the Getas to kill the enemy of the Da*ish, that he has already killed countless beasts and that his only defeats were due to the intervention of sea monsters.

A part of Beowulf's presentation is "" I, here, never say / that I am, in the power of struggle, superior / to Grendel - nor in exploits of war. / I am not coming to leave you lifeless / with this sword mine, although that I / could. "

Explanation:

Beowulf is an Anglo-Saxon poem and tells the story of the warrior Beowulf who uses his supernatural strength to defeat the monster Grendel and bring peace to the Da*ish people.

Beowulf is an epic hero and as such has great strength, beauty, loyalty, honor, masculinity and an intense courage to defeat any enemy. These were characteristics much appreciated by the Anglo-Saxon people which shows that the poem reveals much of the culture of that time.

THE MATCH

There never was a time when the world was without fire, but there was a time when men did not know how to kindle fire; and after they learned how to kindle one, it was a long, long time before they learned how to kindle one easily. In these days we can kindle a fire without any trouble because we can easily get a match; but we must remember that the match is one of the most wonderful things in the world, and that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make one. Let us learn the history of this familiar little object, the match.

Fire was first given to man by nature itself. When a forest is set on fire by cinders from a neighboring volcano, or when a tree is set ablaze by a thunderbolt, we may say that nature strikes a match. In the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark. The first method, then, of getting fire for use was to light sticks of wood at a flame kindled by nature—by a volcano, perhaps, or by a stroke of lightning. These firebrands were carried to the home and used in kindling the fires there. The fire secured in this way was carefully guarded and was kept burning as long as possible. But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished. A sudden gust of wind or a sudden shower would put it out. Then a new firebrand would have to be secured, and this often meant a long journey and a deal of trouble.

In 1827, John Walker, a druggist in a small English town, tipped a splint with sulphur, chlorate of potash, and sulphid of antimony, and rubbed it on sandpaper, and it burst into flame. The druggist had discovered the first friction-chemical match, the kind we use to-day. It is called friction-chemical because it is made by mixing certain chemicals together and rubbing them. Although Walker's match did not require the bottle of acid, nevertheless it was not a good one. It could be lighted only by hard rubbing, and it sputtered and threw fire in all directions. In a few years, however, phosphorus was substituted on the tip for antimony, and the change worked wonders. The match could now be lighted with very little rubbing, and it was no longer necessary to have sandpaper upon which to rub it. It would ignite when rubbed on any dry surface, and there was no longer any sputtering. This was the phosphorus match, the match with which we are so familiar.

How does the author convince readers that the match was "the most wonderful thing in the world"? Please respond in three to five complete sentences, using evidence from the text to support your answer.

Explanation:

We note the author's intriguing statement at the outset when he said "that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make" a match.

Also, he further highlighted how problematic it was to depend on nature when he said "in the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark".

To express the problems further, the author also says that they would have to guard the fire but the fire would still go out sometimes and then they would have to go on long and difficult journeys.

Answer:

The author is trying to develop that relying on nature was problematic by stating that fire was first given to man by nature when mother nature made a forest light on fire. After that, humans would try to recreate that and that was very dangerous. They would try and to put a piece of wood in a flame kindled by nature.

Answers

Answer:

The purpose of those words is:

D. to appeal to as large an audience as possible.

Explanation:

If something is difficult, complicated, uncommon, you can be sure that very few people will be interested in it. Maybe it is because they cannot understand it. Perhaps it is because they think they cannot understand it and, therefore, do not even try. When Paine says he offers "simple facts, plain arguments, and common sense," he is wisely choosing such adjectives to appeal to everyone. If something is easy, simple, plain, everyone will think him/herself capable of understanding it. Everyone will be interested. And that is his purpose: to appeal to a large audience.

Answer:

(A) Now Owen understood exactly what it was like to be in George’s shoes.

Explanation:

This statement distorts what the life of George is like; making it appear to be great all the time. The distortion does not take into account the pressure of the high expectations and disappointment George would feel when he does not win the game. Owen thinks and feels that he knows exactly how it is to be in George's shoes--from just this one event. This is the distortion.
