THE VOYAGES OF DOCTOR DOLITTLE
By Hugh Lofting

Chapter 1: The Cobbler's Son
My name was Tommy Stubbins, son of Jacob Stubbins, the cobbler of Puddleby-on-the-Marsh; and I was nine and a half years old. At that time Puddleby was only quite a small town. A river ran through the middle of it; and over this river there was a very old stone bridge, called Kingsbridge, which led you from the market-place on one side to the churchyard on the other.
Sailing-ships came up this river from the sea and anchored near the bridge. I used to go down and watch the sailors unloading the ships upon the river-wall. The sailors sang strange songs as they pulled upon the ropes; and I learned these songs by heart. And I would sit on the river-wall with my feet dangling over the water and sing with the men, pretending to myself that I too was a sailor.

For I longed always to sail away with those brave ships when they turned their backs on Puddleby Church and went creeping down the river again, across the wide lonely marshes to the sea. I longed to go with them out into the world to seek my fortune in foreign lands—Africa, India, China and Peru! When they got round the bend in the river and the water was hidden from view, you could still see their huge brown sails towering over the roofs of the town, moving onward slowly—like some gentle giants that walked among the houses without noise. What strange things would they have seen, I wondered, when next they came back to anchor at Kingsbridge! And, dreaming of the lands I had never seen, I'd sit on there, watching till they were out of sight.

Which phrase from the excerpt most clearly suggests what Tommy thinks a life at sea will bring? (5 points)

The sailors sang strange songs as they pulled upon the ropes
Moving onward slowly—like some gentle giants
What strange things would they have seen
They came back to anchor at Kingsbridge

Answers

Answer 1

The phrase from the excerpt that most clearly suggests what Tommy thinks a life at sea will bring is "What strange things would they have seen". Thus, option 3rd is correct.

What is the theme of The Voyages of Doctor?

Despite its principles of compassion, tolerance, and equality, the Voyages of Doctor was marred by a few statements and drawings that mimicked racial stereotypes. Such behavior was accepted in the 1920s, but it is now considered disrespectful and humiliating.

Tom recounts in these words how he imagines a sailor's life would be, and he dreams of other nations and all the wonders they may see there, and he hopes to grow up, so he can become a sailor and go on all these great adventures throughout the world. Hence, option 3rd is correct.

I need help in this. This work is based off the story “The metamorphosis” I need to write a short essay on one of the writing strategy for each of the course it’s a separate paragraph. I wrote stars on the ones I need to use

Answers

Hello! Hope this isn't too late for you.  I'll just give you a teeny outline of what an essay might look like.  I'm assuming you're reading the book "The Metamorphosis"? Or you are doing it on actual insect metamorphosis?  Not sure but I think you're doing the book.  Please let me know! :D

Alright--so your first paragraph should have a hook sentence.  So this could be something like, "Have you ever heard of ___? Well, ___ can cause ___.  Patients currently recovering from lymphoma received from ___ product have said ____ about ____.  Then your thesis statement: Glycerin is dangerous, and should be illegal, because reason 1, reason 2, and reason 3.  Side note: you can have more reasons than 3, you can have 4-5 for a normal essay.  So you can definitely add more information than that, and this sort of format I have here won't really fit for your essay, but that's kind of an ideal introduction paragraph.  :)  Do not forget your thesis statement, though! That should come either at the beginning 2 or 3 sentences or at the end of the paragraph.  It looks weird when it's in the middle, off of experience.

Your second paragraph should support the reason 1.  Do some research, get some direct quotes, etc., but make sure you cite your sources.  By that, I mean make sure you put the link where you did the research and put it in your bibliography (very bottom of your paper).  A good essay usually has some direct quotes, so here's the format for those.

"_contains a chemical compound called ___," Dr.___ states, "and it is very dangerous to the health of the public."  Then summarize whatever the direct quote said in the next sentence.

Your third paragraph should support the reason 2.  Again, you can do some research here and litter it with direct quotes or paraphrased parts.  An example of paraphrasing:

Direct quote: "Due to its ability to retain moisture, _ may be beneficial for skin health, but it can cause nervous system distress, lymphoma, newly-spawned basal cells and kidney failure." Yikes!
Paraphrased: "__ can keep itself moisturized, so doctors think it could help skin.  However, it can cause ailments like lymphoma, and nervous system distress, pre-cancer cells and kidney failure."

Your fourth paragraph should support paragraph 3, it looks like.  You need a quote from the book or passage to be able to support whatever your answer is to paragraph 3.  Make sure to cite the book and page number.  :)  You also need transition sentences in your essay.  Here's an example:

1st paragraph: [based off of a friend :)] Paranoid or paranormal? My science fair topic was to investigate the things we can't see.  I used magnetic-wave technology to identify sounds that our ears can't pick up, and real electric-wave technology. I did this because I have always been interested in finding things humans don't know about, and purpose.  In this experiment, I did electrowave monitoring, received help from a scientist, and found out that ghosts may be real.

As I mentioned,
I did electrowave monitoring. {...}

A scientist helped me with the electrowave monitoring.  Dr. __ told me what he knew and was curious about, so I hoped to find the answers for him.

He and I worked together to find my results.  The electromagnetic wave signal was at ___.  We then used the soundwave technology, and picked up some words.

Anyway!

Hope that helps you.  If you need anything else, let me know! :D I'll do my best to help you out.

What was the purpose of the Bracero Program in the United States?

Answers

the purpose of the Bracero Program in the United States was to allow Mexican men to work in the states on short-term labor contracts legally.

The bracero program was a mutual agreement signed between the USA and Mexican governments in August 1943. It was a part of the Mexican Farm Labor Program. It came into action during the period 1942 to 1964.

During and after world war II the USA faced a shortage of labor for agriculture and railroads. Due to the same millions of Mexican men were allowed to work in these fields on short-term contracts.

El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juarez served as recruitment centers and points of entry for Braceros. The permits allotted were temporary and people were asked to leave after the completion of contracts.

The workers not receiving permits started crossing borders and working illegally. This created an influx of documented and undocumented labor. In the 60s the number of illegal workers surpassed the legal numbers and hence the program was ended. On 31 December 1964, the program officially ended.

Summarizing teaches students how to identify the most crucial concepts in a text, how to exclude unimportant information, and how to coherently connect the key ideas. It helps students remember what they read when they are taught how to summarize. Nearly all subject areas lend themselves to the application of summarization techniques.

A summary's two objectives are to present these overarching ideas in a clear, detailed manner and to repeat the main points of a text by identifying the major themes that flow throughout the entire work. When summarizing, you cannot rely on the language the author used to establish his or her arguments; instead, you must find a way to provide an overview of them without using overly generic language in your own phrases.
