The two Confederate diplomats were sailing to Europe to find support to their cause from a British Royal Mail steamer "Trent". This led the British government to protested vigorously and they threatened to go to war with the United States.
The conflict was averted when the United States Navy returned the vessel to the British government. This was because it was against international neutrality rule to capture the vessel. Britain demanded the release of the vessel and a formal apology by the US navy.
President Abraham Lincoln released the vessel after due consultations with his advisers and the two confederate ambassadors were allowed to continue their journey to Europe to seek support From Britain and France for military support and to officially recognize the confederate independence.
