Annotation is INCREDIBLY HELPFUL when it comes to gaining a genuine understanding of the text. Highlight, underline, and write notes in the margin to pull out the main ideas in the text. If you are using a library copy, a digital copy, or otherwise cannot annotate, taking notes is the next best thing. I still recommend doing it on paper, however, as writing things down generally tends to help people remember things more than typing them. Again, this is mostly from my experience, so do whatever works for you. Regardless of your method, you should still try to find a way to fully understand the text.Finally, when it comes down to actually writing the study, it becomes very easy if you complete the steps above first.
