Which statement best defines an inference?
O A.
the details stated directly by the author of a passage
KODB.
a conclusion based on evidence and outside knowledge
O C.
a guess that relies only on the reader's prior experiences
KD D.
the background information about a literary work

Answers

Answer:

B). A conclusion based on evidence and outside knowledge.

Explanation:

'Inference' is characterized as 'a deduction or conclusion that is drawn on the basis of sufficient evidence provided by the author and readers' own reasoning. When the reader reads a specific text, he/she observes the background, language, and evidence that the author employs to convey his message and pairs it with their logical reasoning. This allows him/her to reach a specific conclusion regarding the text and that is what we define as 'inference.'

For example, if there is the use of descriptive language, the readers can infer that the author is attempting to convince the audience emotionally. Thus, option B is the correct answer.

Read the excerpt from "Flight into Yesterday." This leg was also the most dangerous of the entire trip. Howland, 2,600 miles to the east, was a tiny speck of land in the middle of the vast Pacific. It would take all of her skill as a pilot and Fred’s as a navigator to find the island. But danger did not worry her. She knew that flying carried risks. She faced them and accepted them. What mattered was setting herself a challenge and meeting it. What mattered was showing that women could do what men could do and encouraging other women to do what they were capable of. That was why she was flying over the Pacific, looking for a speck of land. Fame was never her goal. The important thing was to do what she had set out to do and to do it as well as she knew how. She had been that way all her life. Amelia Earhart, world-famous flier, was very much like the young girl who once lived in Atchison, Kansas. What best describes the author’s purpose?

What was happening in the world and in the United States in 1979 and 1980 that is connected to the story The Boys of Winter.

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

The history of the United States from 1964 to 1980 includes the climax and victory of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States; the escalation and ending of the Vietnam War; second wave feminism; the drama of the generational revolt with their sexual freedoms and drug use; the continuation of the Cold War, with his space race to take a man to the Moon. The economy was prosperous until the 1969-70 recession, then declined due to external competition and high oil prices. American society was polarized by the ultimately futile war and by protests against the war and conscription, as well as by the Watergate Affair, which revealed corruption at the highest level of government. By 1980 and the takeover of the US embassy in Iran there was a growing feeling of national unrest.

The period closed with the victory of conservative Republican Ronald Reagan, ushering in the "Reagan Era" with a drastic change in national leadership. The Democratic Party was divided on the issue of the Vietnam War and other foreign policy issues, counting on a new element based on young voters. Many of the Democrats considered liberal in other areas joined the neoconservative movement and began to support the Republicans (especially Reagan) on foreign policy. Meanwhile, Republicans were generally united in intense American nationalism, strong opposition to Communism, and strong support for Israel.

Memories of the 1960s shaped the political landscape of the next half century. As Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton explained in 1990, "If you look back at the 1960s and think there were more good things than bad, you are probably a Democrat. If you think you did more harm than good, you are probably a Republican. "1

Read the passage from Sugar Changed the World. Sugar was the connection, the tie, between slavery and freedom. In order to create sugar, Europeans and colonists in the Americas destroyed Africans, turned them into objects. Just at that very same moment, Europeans—at home and across the Atlantic—decided that they could no longer stand being objects themselves. They each needed to vote, to speak out, to challenge the rules of crowned kings and royal princes. How could that be? Why did people keep speaking of equality while profiting from slaves? In fact, the global hunger for slave-grown sugar led directly to the end of slavery. Following the strand of sugar and slavery leads directly into the tumult of the Age of Revolutions. For in North America, then England, France, Haiti, and once again North America, the Age of Sugar brought about the great, final clash between freedom and slavery. Which sentence best states the authors' claim in this passage? Economic demand for sugar led to political pressure to end enslavement. The growing demand for sugar made the lives of enslaved people even worse. Turning Africans into objects was important for the sugar industry to succeed. Monarchies became increasingly strong and popular during the Age of Sugar.

Answers

Answer:

A). Economic demand for sugar led to political pressure to end enslavement.

Explanation:

The first statement i.e. 'economic....enslavement' most aptly states the author's claim in the given passage as he says that 'they could no longer stand being objects themselves.' The author provides sufficient support to justify his claim by stating that 'the global hunger for slave-grown sugar led directly to the end of slavery.' The increasing economic demand for sugar eventually led to 'the Age of Revolutions and a clash between sugar and slavery' as the slaves were a crucial factor in the production of the sugar and meet the rising demands. Thus, this led to the end of slavery, and hence, option A is the correct answer.

Answer:

A). Economic demand for sugar led to political pressure to end enslavement.

Andrea Mathews looked at the tiny hat in his hands and felt jumpy.

He walked over to the window and reflected on his beautiful surroundings. He had always loved grey Amsterdam with its lonely, light lakes. It was a place that encouraged his tendency to feel jumpy.

Then he saw something in the distance, or rather someone. It was the figure of Jona Thunder. Jona was a clever coward with brunette hair.

Andrea gulped. He glanced at his own reflection. He was tall with thick eyebrows and wide thighs. His friends saw him as courageous. Once, he had even brought a knowing puppy back from the brink of death.

But not even a special person who had once brought a knowing puppy back from the brink of death, was prepared for what Jona had in store today.

The snow flurried like singing foxes, making Andrea relaxed.

As Andrea stepped outside and Jona came closer, he could see the vigorous glint in his eye.

Jona glared with all the wrath of 7897 wild bored bears. He said, in hushed tones, "I hate you and I want a fight."

Andrea looked back, even more relaxed and still playing with the tiny hat. "Lets do this," he replied.

They looked at each other with confident feelings, like two hard, hungry guys looking for a fight.

Andrea stepped forward and as he did his hat transformed into a sword.

Jona looked surprised, but he didnt let the surprise weapon stop him from drawing out his own sword.

And then the fight began.

Me and my girl friend, Vanessa, collect odd things.

When I say odd, I mean disturbing. Glass jars full of pickled snakes, fish, slugs, and any other gross creature we happen to like. We have bones scattered everywhere around our house in the forms of jewelry, wall pieces, art, statues, ect. We have dead taxidermy mice, snakes, squirrels, and even a cat that used to be Vanessa's. We don't pickle or taxidermy them ourselves, we just find them from scary estate sales, antique sales, or stores.

One day, while looking for an anniversary gift for Vanessa, I came across a black magic shop. I know she likes the concept of black magic, and very creepy things, so I decided to go in. The shop smelled like old socks and cloves, and it was dark. There were books of all kinds, spices, jars, sage sticks, and different charms around the entire store. As I was looking around the store, a man comes out from the back of the shop, holding a box full of bottles.

"Can I help you with anything?" The man asked, and I nodded.

"Uh, yeah, my girl friend and I have been together for about 5 years, and I was looking for an anniversary gift for her. Got any ideas for me? She really likes odd things, ya' know?"

He nods, and beckons me over to the counter. I put down the jar I was examining, and walk over. He disappears into the back again, and comes back out with a doll that is made out of wood.

"Does she like dolls? Maybe she'll like to have Karlie. I've been looking for a home for her for many years, but well... You know the stigma of scary looking dolls. She isn't haunted, I promise, just a little odd looking."  He explained, and I was ecstatic. Yeah, the doll looked scary, but the scarier the better, honestly. It means Vanessa would like it even more. It's head was very round, with painted rosy cheeks and dark painted on eyes. It's nose and ears were sticking out, and it's hair was made of yarn.

"Oh, my God. She'll love it. She has an entire room at home full of weird dolls and such. Thank you so much sir! How much?" I asked, pulling out my wallet.

"Oh, no. You don't have to pay anything. Karlie here has been living in my shop for so long, she's free. Take her." He said, smiling at the doll then holding her out for me. "You take good care of her now," he says. "If you ever need her repaired, just bring her back here. I'll do it for free."

I was a little shocked by how nice he was being, but nodded in agreement. "Of course. My girl friend takes care of all her stuff."

Later that evening, after we had dinner and went on a well deserved date night, it was time for me to give her the gift.

"Hey, I got you something." I said, and picked up the shoe box from the floor beside the couch, and handed it to her.

"Oh, thank you, Kevin! I love it so, so much!" She said after she opened it, flinging her arms around me. "What's her name?"

"Karlie. The man at the store called her Karlie. She'll look good with the rest of your collection, huh?" I asked, and she nodded enthusiastically, hugging the doll to her chest.

"I love you, Kevin," She said, and I smiled.

That night, she decided to sleep with the doll in our room, and I had no objections. I was just so glad that she loved it, I didn't care what she did with it. She can be hard to shop for, since she's already seen everything weird and has everything she could want.

But, later that night, I swore I could hear a baby crying. I woke up to hear Vanessa talking quietly, and a baby crying so loud that it was almost ear splitting.

"Shh, shh, it's okay Karlie, I know he gave you away, but I'm gonna take good care of you." My heart stopped. You'd think someone who collects the most odd things imaginable would be used to scary things happening, but really, that's not true. This has never happened before. Watching my girl friend talk to a crying doll that I swear wasn't alive earlier is one of the weirdest things that has ever happened. Ever.

"Vanessa? Why are you talking to the doll?" I asked, she looked at me like I was a dunce.

"Her father just gave her away like that. The man who created her, the shop owner." She explained to me, cradling the wooden baby.

Instead of freaking out, like any sane person would, I just nodded. I nodded and let her cradle that baby, and act like it was real. I heard it too, so she's not the only one. I never even really questioned it after a while, just kind of went with it.

I don't exactly remember when we started treating it like a real baby, but it just sort of happened. Vanessa wanted the doll to keep from getting mad, so she gave her the best life she possibly could. And I just went with it. I mean, what else could you do?  So that is how we became parents. Of a wooden doll.

Help please. I’ll appreciate it very much.

Which excerpt represents Armstrong’s purpose in writing this passage? “ . . .you’d like to hear about how Lance Armstrong became a Great American . . . .” “When I was 25 I got testicular cancer and nearly died.” “I’m not here to make polite conversation. I want to tell the truth.” “Death is not exactly cocktail-party conversation, I know . . . .”

Answers

The passage of Armstrong is missing, here is the passage:

When I was 25 I got testicular cancer and nearly died. I was given less than a 40 percent chance of surviving, and frankly, some of my doctors were just being kind when they gave me those odds. Death is not exactly cocktail party conversation, I know, and neither is cancer, or brain surgery, or matters below the waist. But I'm not here to make polite conversation. I want to tell the truth. I'm sure you'd like to hear about how Lance Armstrong became a Great American and an Inspiration To Us All, how he won the Tour de France, the 2,290-mile road race that's considered the single most grueling sporting event on the face of the earth. You want to hear about faith and mystery, and my miraculous comeback, and how I joined towering figures like Greg LeMond and Miguel Indurain in the record book. You want to hear about my lyrical climb through the Alps and my heroic conquering of the Pyrenees, and how it felt. But the Tour was the least of the story.

The correct answer to this question is C.  “I’m not here to make polite conversation. I want to tell the truth.”

Explanation:

In texts, the purpose is defined as the main reason for writing a text, which can include to inform, persuade, explain, etc. In the case of the passage presented, the purpose of Lance Armstrong is to explain his truth, this is directly expressed in the section "But I'm not here to make polite conversation. I want to tell the truth".

Moreover, this purpose is supported through other details that include the fact Armstrong had cancer and his perspective that his triumph in the Tour of France was not the only important part of his story because this shows Armstrong want to tell all the truth about himself and his story rather than being polite and only tell those parts the audience wants to hear.
