The narrator begins to investigate the theory that people's brains are computing slower after realizing that several clocks concurrently appear to be running quickly even though they do not appear to be broken. The scientist examines their own brain in detail and learns that it functions by allowing air to pass through gold leaves.
According to the scientist, this is because air passes through leaves more slowly as a result of growing atmospheric pressure. Eventually, the subsurface argon supply will run out, bringing the pressure between the two atmospheres to equilibrium.
